A Guide to CSCS Red Cards
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme, more commonly known as CSCS, plays a vital role in maintaining standards on construction sites across the UK. The scheme links site access to training and qualifications, ensuring that everyone on a construction site has the relevant skills and health and safety awareness to work safely. One of the most important cards within the scheme is the CSCS red card.
At Contractwise, we’re experts in CIS compliance and offer a wide range of services that protect contractors and subcontractors. As part of our work, we have a broad understanding of all CSCS cards, and in this article, we’ll take a closer look at the red CSCS card.

What is a CSCS red card?
The red card is not a single card, but a category that encompasses a range of cards for trainee and provisional roles. It is designed for individuals who are new to construction and who are working towards a recognised qualification. Unlike green, blue, gold or black cards, the red card does not confirm full competence within a role. Instead, it shows that the holder is working towards achieving the qualifications that would reflect this.
There are several types of CSCS red cards, including:
- Apprentice card: For those registered on a recognised apprenticeship
- Trainee card: For individuals working towards an NVQ or SVQ
- Industry placement card: For students on construction-related courses.
- Provisional card: For those starting work but who have not yet registered on a qualification
Each of these cards exists to ensure that workers are supervised on a construction site, that training is properly documented and to help with progress towards a full qualification.
What does a red CSCS card do?
The CSCS red card allows individuals to legally gain access to a construction site while they train and gain the necessary experience. It reassures employers and site managers that while the worker is not yet qualified, they are actively working towards meeting the industry standards.
In practical terms, a red card allows the following:
- Confirms the holder is registered on a recognised training route
- Allows entry to sites that require CSCS credentials
- Signals that the worker must operate under supervision
- Demonstrates commitment to professional development
From a business perspective, red cards help demonstrate that those holding the card are able to work on the site and are working towards becoming fully qualified.
Requirements for a CSCS red card
The requirements will vary depending on the type of red CSCS card you are applying for. However, in general, you will need:
- Proof of registration on a recognised qualification or apprenticeship
- Evidence of employment or placement in the construction industry
- Passing the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test
- Valid identification
To be more specific:
- Apprentice card applicants must provide confirmation from their training provider
- Trainee card applicants must show they are enrolled on a relevant NVQ or SVQ course
- Industry placement cards require proof of an approved academic course with a construction placement element
It’s worth emphasising that red CSCS cards are strictly temporary and not intended to replace skilled worker or supervisory cards.
How to apply for a CSCS red card
You can apply for a red CSCS card by following these steps:
- Confirm eligibility: Make sure you are enrolled in a recognised training programme, apprenticeship or qualification pathway.
- Pass the CITB HS&E test: Most red card applicants will need to complete this test to demonstrate basic health and safety knowledge.
- Gather documents: Make sure you have your registration confirmation, employer details and identification.
- Apply online: Upload your documents online and complete the application form. At this stage, you’ll also need to pay the relevant fee.
- Receive your red CSCS card: Once approved, the card will be issued. It should reach you within a few days and will be available online immediately.
How long is a CSCS red card valid for?
CSCS red cards are temporary but vary in length depending on the type of card you need. This includes:
- Apprentice cards: This is typically valid for the length of your apprenticeship, with a maximum duration of 4.5 years.
- Trainee cards: These cards are valid for 5 years for NVQ and SVQ courses or two years for non-competence qualifications
- Industry placement cards: These cards are valid for 3 years.
- Provisional cards: These cards are only valid for six months.
Red cards cannot be renewed, and once they have expired, you will need to progress to another appropriate CSCS card.
